What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is all about learning to direct our attention to our experience as it unfolds, moment by moment, with open-minded curiosity, kindness and acceptance. Rather than worrying about what has happened or might happen, it trains us to explore and respond skilfully to whatever is happening right now.
Why teach it in schools?
Benefits for adults: Mindfulness training has been shown to improve health and wellbeing. It can help
staff think more clearly, perform better and feel calmer and less anxious. It is increasingly being used in business, education and sports training to improve job satisfaction and performance.
What are the benefits for children?
Mindfulness interventions have shown the potential to improve attention, social skills, academic attention, test anxiety and psychological health.
David Bignell is the Head Teacher of a local primary school where he has introduced Mindfulness to both adults and children. Since 2014 he has trained with Bangor University and the Mindfulness in Schools Project and regularly attends Mindfulness retreats and training courses.
