Project 1 : Background

Background to Language Improvement Training Resources and Materials

‘These resources have been produced as part of the languages Support Programme, funded by the DfE and managed by CfBT Education Trust. The responsibility for content creation and quality assurance lies with the individual TSA.’

MTSA is committed to improving primary teachers’ confidence in the use of the target language and their ability to deliver languages as part of the primary curriculum. The Languages Support Programme (LSP) has provided an excellent opportunity build on existing relationships between primary and secondary schools, and to share good practice. Together with an experienced languages teacher who has expertise in primary practice, the MTSA has designed a course for teachers in participating schools.

The following schools have been involved in the project:

  • Abbey Court Special School
  • Allhallows Primary School
  • Brompton Westbrook Primary School
  • Cuxton Community Junior School
  • Delce Junior School
  • Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School (SJWMS)

The course has been designed to support class teachers in developing their confidence and competence in delivering a French curriculum to their learners.

The course was well attended with an average of 10 learners who came with a wide range of abilities and skills along with a range of key stage 1 and 2 experiences in the teaching of French.

Over the academic year 15 X 1 hour sessions were planned to take place at SJWMS on a variety of evenings from 4.15 to 5.15pm. One day’s bespoke training was organised for individual schools. In addition to this colleagues were encouraged to supplement their learning with private study and personal reflection.

Overview of Sessions:

Prior to the first session primary school teachers completed a preliminary questionnaire in order to help assess the needs and levels of the teachers.
